Vivian Cheruiyot has won gold and broken the Olympic Record by winning the 5000m final. Helen Obiri takes silver. The Kenyans ran a perfect race and took advantage of Ethiopian Almaz Ayana’s erroneous tactic to beat the 10,000m Gold Medallist.

Coming into the race full of confidence after her record breaking performance in the 10,000m final, Ayana started strongly, going to the front of the pack and opening up a significant lead over the rest of the field.

Cheruiyot and Obiri, however, were not tempted to race after the Ethiopian, choosing instead to run at a controlled pace.

With 800m to go, the Kenyan duo picked up the pace, and two hundred meters later caught up with the  Ethiopian, who’d run out of gas. At this point, the Kenyan win was a formality, the duo running in 14:26.17 and 14:29.77 respectively to clinch an Olympic 1-2 for Kenya.

Congratulations, Cheruiyot and Obiri.
