KENYA 7 – 31 GB
Kenya has lost its opening match against Team GB at the Rio Olympics 2016. First half tries by Dan Norton, Phil Burges, Mark Bennett and Dan Bibby, as well as a second try by Dan Bibby and three conversions by Tom Mitchell condemned the Kenyan team to a 31-7 loss.
Kenya scored one try early in the second half, with Billy Odhiambo crossing the white line, and Biko Adema converted.
After the women’s team lost all their opening matches, all hope was on the Kenyan team as they took on a strong GB side. However, the match never started well for the Kenyans, who were five points behind in less than two minutes, with Dan Norton crossing the line for team GB’s opening try. Shambolic defense by the Kenyans allowed Burges, Bennett and Bibby to add further tries. Mitchell could only convert two of the first half tries, meaning the team was 24-0 at half time.
Kenya started brightly in the second half, with Billy Odhiambo powering through to score. Biko Adema converted easily, but what promised to be a comeback try eventually became a consolation try for the Kenyans. Team GB added more sparkle to their scoreline with a closing try by Bibby. Mitchell made no mistake with the conversion.
The Kenya Sevens team faces New Zealand next, who suffered a shock defeat to Japan in their opening match.
